Mothering Emma Kate and Jack…

Local organic produce

I think I’m in my element with this new type of blog post. I can share all sorts of parenting tips, and readers can choose to tune me out, and I will never know. Hmmm… I bet Chris would appreciate it if I would simply blog my conversations to him (just kidding, love).

So, last week I signed up for a home delivery service that brings fresh, organic, mostly local produce right to my doorstep once every two weeks. I ran across the advertisement for Absolute Organics and decided I should give it a try. Absolute Organics is a family-owned business in Newton, NC that delivers to Lake Norman and surrounding areas. The service can be tailored to a family’s needs- you can opt for delivery once per week or once every other week. You can even customize your produce box based on the types of fruits and veggies your family prefers. Our first delivery arrived last Wednesday, and I was pleased with the contents (4 apples, 4 grapefruits, 5 bananas, 4 oz. blueberries, 1 mango, 3 large yellow squash, 3 Roma tomatoes, 1 bunch green onions, 1 bunch carrots, and 1 large head Romaine lettuce). We opted for the small box- which is regularly $30 (the first box was only $20 with an initial delivery discount of $10). I plan to compare prices with organic produce at both Harris Teeter and Home Economist. My only concern at this point is waste- I won’t continue the service if I find we are wasting food. So far, so good. From the first produce box, we had oven-fried squash, pasta with sauteed veggies, blueberry and banana smoothies, and plenty of fruit for snacks. My hope is that we will be forced to add new foods to our repertoire of vegetarian edibles.
